Sports & Special Interests in Austria - walking, wine, and wildlife...your interest is our interest

As outlined in the Ski Holidays section of this website, there are many ways of enjoying a variety of Austrian sporting experiences as a spectator without taking to the slopes yourself. Alternatively, you might fancy some ice-climbing or mountaineering. However, we only recommend you consider this with the assistance of local experts and highly-qualified guides. Likewise the summer months, when the snows have cleared, there are plenty of great golf courses that welcome visitors – believe it or not, the bottom of the fearsome Streif on the Hahnenkamm Mountain in Kitzbühel that the ski-racers fly over at extraordinary speeds from spring-time onwards becomes one of the town’s golf courses. There are other courses in spectacular locations, for example, around the resort of Seefeld, in the Ziller Valley just outside of Fügen, on the lake-side at Zell am See to mention but a few.

Obviously, skiing, snowboarding, walking, and mountain-biking are the staples that are available around every resort around the country, but in summer many of the lakes offer great opportunities for sailing, wind-surfing, paddle-boarding and swimming. For the more adventurous mountain-lovers, many of the resorts have their alpine schools, where their local expert guides will look after you on climbs, mountain tours, or canyoning.
Your pleasures and interests don’t all have to be strenuous ones, although quite a few will involve some walking in the mountains, for example, searching out and photographing stunning alpine flowers, bird-watching, looking for the elusive chamois, or trying to spot the adorable marmots – you’re likely to hear them first, and when you do, you’ll understand why they are known as ‘whistlers’ in North America.
If your particular interests steer you in a more culinary direction, Austria has many great sweet and savoury specialities with which to tempt you, and some of the hotels in Vienna offer cookery courses, which will help you to do justice to the great delicacies of Apfelstrüdel, Sachertorte, Kaiserschmarn or Salzburger Knockerl. Of course, especially around the capital city of Vienna and along the banks of the River Danube, there are some of the finest vineyards in Europe, producing a stunning selection of red and white wines. Many offer private tours and tastings.
Austria is also a country where ‘the Sound of Music’ is not just a great film, but is a way of life. Bregenz and Salzburg both have a world-wide reputation for their annual musical festivals. Less well-known, but no less respected is the Summer Fesitval in Villach in Southern Austria, and, of course, once you are in Vienna, you are simply spoilt for choice for concert venues and performances. In Salzburg, you are never far from a celebration of the life and works of Mozart, whereas we defy anyone visiting Vienna, and seeing the River Danube for the first time, not to be swept along by the music of the famous Strauss Family.
For art lovers, Innsbruck, Linz and Graz all have wonderful galleries where you can while away many hours looking at beautiful paintings. The Residenz Gallerie in Salzburg contains masterpieces will take the breath away, and in Vienna, the famous Belvedere Palace houses one of the finest painting collections in the world, including the incredibly beautiful paintings by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
Whatever your passion or special interest – whether sporting, musical, artistic, culinary, cultural or simply enjoying the scenery – Austria has something for everyone.
