Citybreaks in Austria - a great option at any time of year

If you are looking for a country that offers you a choice of perfect short-break or city-break destinations, then there are not many places that can compete with the Austrian jewels of Innsbruck – in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by its own ‘necklace of glaciers’, Salzburg – birth-place of Mozart and other great composers, and home to ‘The Sound of Music’, and Vienna – Imperial Capital for centuries, and still famed for its grandeur, beautiful buildings and unforgettable style.

However, you should not miss out on becoming friends with Austria’s less well-known cities, such as beautiful Bregenz on the shores of Lake Constance, or historic Linz. In summer, Klagenfurt, Villach and Graz can be the starting point for exploring the delightful lakes and rolling countryside of Carintha and Styria - areas almost unknown to British visitors, but just crying out to be discovered.

You can fly into a selection of airports, or ones close by. In the case of Innsbruck and Bregenz, if not landing into Innsbruck itself, then flying into Zurich or Munich and travelling eastwards and south respectively works perfectly. Munich is also a great access point for Salzburg, and an easy drive or train journey over to Linz. Villach, Graz and Klagenfurt can be reached from a number of different points, including flying into Ljubljana in neighbouring Slovenia, and of course, the capital city of Vienna has direct scheduled flight connections to airports across the UK.

Getting around all the cities is easy, with excellent public transport services, combining rail, buses and trams. All the cities have large pedestrian-free areas in their centres, and could never be accused of being short of wonderful places to eat and drink, with museums and art galleries a-plenty to explore.

A popular option with many of our clients is a multi-centre tour starting with a flight into Munich, a couple of nights in the city, then onwards to Salzburg by train, then along the banks of the Danube past the famous monastery at Melk, and into Vienna, with a flight back from there, or a further rail journey to Budapest, Bratislava or Prague.

The cities of Austria offer you everything that a city-break destination should – whether you are looking for a Christmas market, romantic spring break, summer warmth, or the colours of Autumn – perfect, whatever the time of year.
