Experience Italy - there's no other country to match

It is very hard, if not impossible, to think of any other single county that offers as many different great travel experiences as Italy. It truly has everything –iconic historical cities stunning museums and art galleries than are the envy of the world; fabulous beaches and islands, startling mountain scenery, beautiful vineyards set amongst rolling hills, and lake-land areas that will truly take your breath away.

As a result of its proximity and diversity, it has long been a favourite two-centre combination with Austria. The most obvious route through to Italy is via the Brenner Pass from Innsbruck, which takes visitors over the stunning Europa Bridge, and onwards through the German-speaking South Tirol to the resorts of the Dolomites, beautiful Lake Garda, and the twin jewels of Verona and Venice. Alternatively, you can travel through to Lower Austria, and cross the border into Italy close to the city of Villach, and onwards via Udine to the port city of Trieste.

You don't even need to drive to experience a twin-centre holiday between these two countries. In summer, visitors to the ever-popular resort of Mayrhofen in the Tirol can take the Post bus up to the reservoir at Schlegeis, and from the car park it is only just over an hour's walk to the border, where you can look down on San Giacomo and the Castello Tasso from the terrace of the mountain restaurant. Thanks to the Euro and the Schengen Agreement whilst you are no longer required to show your passport or convert your Schillings into Lire to buy a drink or a pizza, you are left in no doubt where you are.

It makes perfect sense that there are such close links between Austria and Italy, as going back to the days of the glory days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, administered from Vienna, when all these areas of what is now Northern Italy were integral parts of the vast area of Europe ruled by the Hapsburg dynasty, and Venice and Trieste were the Empire's principle trading routes to the Mediterranean.

We offer the complete range of holidays to enable you to combine Austria and Italy together in a perfectly-varied itinerary, demonstrating everything that Italy has to offer. Of course, along with Verona and Venice, there are the familiar cities of Florence, Rome and Bologna, or you can stay further north, exploring the northern powerhouse cities of Turin and Milan with their beautiful mountain surroundings.

Austria and Italy not only share many historical links, but still fit together now to provide you with the perfect twin-centre lakes and mountains combination.
